I had the honor of collaborating on a litter with Linda and John, using their stud Hemi on my female. As a fellow breeder, I cannot speak highly enough of what a pleasure it was to co-breed a litter with them. Their honesty, integrity, passion for bettering the German Shepherd breed, and pure hearts, are a breath of fresh air in the dog world. Their stud Hemi is the utmost gentleman, and he made the most beautiful puppies. I'm already looking forward to repeating this breeding.

Hi Linda!
I just wanted to reach out and thank you again for the pup we picked up from the Olive/Hemi line back at the end of January. Her name is Rocket (after Rocket Racoon from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy). Today she is 1 year old and we couldn't be happier. Being an active dog and a puppy she has done her fair share of destroying things but we couldn't be happier! This dog is obsessed with playing fetch. The highlight of her day is to go across the street to the park and have me throw a ball for her. She will bring random toys to you and want you to throw them as well. Also she learns so fast. It seems like we only have to teach/show her things only a few times before she remembers it and will repeat the behavior on command. If I ever need another German Shepherd I will be coming back to you! Thanks again! |
Hi there Linda,
Ava Roo is one year old today! (Dakota/Eli) It's been so much fun adding her to our family and seeing how much she's grown over the year. She has quite the personality. When we first met her, we thought she was going to be shy and have a mild temperament; and boy is she the opposite of shy! She is sassy and energetic, she LOVES other dogs, she LOVES humans, especially if they play tug with her, she always wants to be outside and if she's inside, she's usually looking out a window or claiming the bed or couch as her favorite napping spots. Ava has started to snuggle with us more and more and wants to spend every moment with us, but when she's left alone, she does so well. I've never seen a dog adapt so easily to new situations. A ride in the car is a highlight every time; one moment her head is out the window, she's going back and forth taking in all of the scenery, and the next moment, she's sound asleep. It has been a joy with our little adventure pup and we're so appreciative of the quality and healthy start you gave her!
Thank you! Hope you're well!

Hi Linda-
Sorry this is so long overdue but I thought I would send you some pictures of Igor (Eli/Shelby puppy). He is certainly loved and an amazing family dog.... VERY protective of me and the kids. For being the smallest of the litter he has certainly grown and even our friends who also have shepherds will comment as to how large and handsome he is (approaching 90lbs and not even a year old... and not from fat). As you can see in the pictures he sometimes thinks that he is still the small puppy from when we got him. Thank you so much!

Echo is super smart, affectionate, loves to work, and is wonderful with other dogs. The trainer was so impressed with him that they made a note of you being a reputable GSD breeder here in Colorado. Just wanted to give you the good news! He is doing so well. We love him and are looking forward to many years with him.

The puppy I got from this breeder exceeded my expectations in every way. He has astonishing agility, gorgeous conformation, and he’s a total sweetheart. At only 5 months, he is already showing every sign of becoming a fine protector. Thank you,
Linda Hartelt . I love Jett so much. CF |

Raksha: a Maya/Hemi puppy.
Hi Linda!
I just wanted to thank you so much again for choosing us to care for Raksha. She truly has been an amazing dog with such a sweet heart.
She is a true blue family dog. She'll stay right by my side while out on walks, while I'm working out in the yard, and even in the house. She's really imprinted on all of us.
Sticking to the German Shepherd nature, she does so well with our three small children, as well as our other pets. She can be a bit aloof to strangers at first, but after a short few minutes of observing she warms right up!
Raksha is high-spirited. She absolutely LOVES to play fetch with a ball. She loves to go on car rides with us. She's very affectionate with her gentle kisses, haha! Our girls love to run around our property with Raksha right by their side "shepherding" them. She's got so many great qualities I have a difficult time listing them all. So, all on all, thanks so much again for such an amazing, sweet-hearted dog.

Hey Linda, My name is Jason P. and I wanted to give you a 10 month update on Odin. Purchased him from you guys back in August (Hemi/Wager parvo litter) And I’ve gotta say, he’s been outstanding. Definitely mischievous but smarter than I could of ever hoped for. He’s about 70 pounds or so and as athletic as can be. There is no “tired” for this guy. Started protection training with him about a month ago. The trainers and others at the class marvel at his drive and calmness when on a bite. I’ve been told by more than one person, this is strictly the result of genetics. There have been several people who have inquired where I purchased him from and I’ve been sure to give you guys a great review. I’ve included some pics also... Thanks again,
Jason P.

Here are 2 pics of Anubis (he is 2 today and from Affie/Hemi litter) he is a great boy!!
Hello Linda,
We wanted to give you an update on Remy who we picked up on December 16th last year.
It’s hard to describe what an amazing dog she is.
She loves her people and is incredibly protective of her family. She comes with me to put my 4 year old daughter to bed every night and has to give her kisses before she leaves the room. She runs with our 12 year old daughter when she practices for track.
My husband continues to train with the CSPD K-9 unit and is currently a candidate to start as a K9 Officer. He brought so many valuable training tricks home which made Remy very obedient. Her alert behavior is exactly what we were looking for with my husband’s line of work.
When she isn’t playing with her favorite toys, tennis balls, she loves to snuggle and worships her belly rubs.
I am her person in our home, although, she obviously loves every single one of us. When I get back from nursing school classes she is so happy, one would think I had been gone for years.
Thank you for giving us our Remy. She completes our family so perfectly.
Sincerely, Vanessa B

Had a blast with Sean and Autumn M, with 9wk half siblings, Matthis and Eira! "Interesting" beginning, as the pups have known each other for most of their short lives, and were really "packing up". But it didn't take long to start getting attention, then recalls and focus. Mom and Dad are really motivated to learn good training techniques, so they are going to ROCK!!!!
|
Sweet! This litter is just awesome!
We have done a puppy play date with Sean and Autumn and their two pups and all these dogs just get tons of compliments . They are just too smart and good looking , and train so well. Josh and Christina M. with 12wk GSD M, Mossad. They are in the arena of Baby Einstein obedience! Verbal downs, stays, recalls, and an incredible nose!!! Hard to believe that 2 weeks ago, he was very mouthy, and blowing them off. With IPO as their goal, I'll be starting them on footstep tracking and bitework next session. Awesome team!!! #positivedogtrainer #positivedogtraining #protectiondog #IPO #schutzhund #balanceddogtraining #balanceddogtrainer #trackingdog |
Phenomenal first session with Marisa Medrano and 8.5wk GSD F, Jazebell!!! She is a typical happy, social pup, which includes jumping like crazy. She sat on the 5th rep of the off exercise!!! Minds blown!😎😎😎 Showed them some focus and self-control exercises, and got screaming recalls as soon as the family made adjustments! Everyone dialed in quickly. Definitely going to be rockstars!!! Another awesome Linda Hartelt pup!!!!

Shiloh, Texi/Hemi puppy, second ear almost up... he is crate trained and travels with us all the time. Never been sick. He even walked the aisle with us as Great Grandparents at our grandsons rehersal,,,wasn't allowed in the wedding! He knows his name and come and sit. Not housetrained yet and puppy biting still an issue......
Later: Shiloh is sweet and very smart, definitely a people dog. At one year he weighs 100 pounds.

Linda, hope you and your family are doing well!
As Ronin approaching his birthday, I thought I’d give you a quick update.
Generally, we couldn’t be happier having Ronin a part of our family. He is absolutely amazing and is making our lives more complete.
He is healthy and vigorous. He’s been eating raw (meat and bones) from the get go and I wouldn’t change a thing. Chicken quarters, pork ribs, chicken and beef lever, turkey, some fish (canned and raw), oatmeal/buckwheat off the table occasionally and I supplement with calcium (no vitamin D) and fish oil. It ends up very affordable and convenient — I get chicken quarters in 10lb bags for $5, spare ribs for $1.74/lb, etc. I let him eat as much as he wants and he is pure muscle with no fat.
Ronin is exceptionally smart. I didn’t need help with regular obedience training. I found a great trainer in the Denver area for protection training. Here is Joey Baker’s website: http://www.denverprotectiondog.com/. I’d recommend him without any reservations. Since it is a 3 hr one way drive for me, we see Joey only once or twice a month. Even with that in mind, Joey told me recently that Ronin is already a real protection dog. Ronin has a very strong and balanced character, good nerves, confident and strong bite, he is composed and controllable. He bites in all the right circumstances (we’ve transitioned to a full bite suite) — when I am attacked or on my command, including when I sent him away off leash. I’ve been watching Leerburg video’s on protection and police dog training and it looks to me that Ronin would be among the top mature dogs even though he is not even a year old. Joey says that Ronin exhibits the traits of the DDR bloodlines, even though I understand that his bloodlines are more West German. On the flip side, according to Joey, Ronin wouldn’t excel in sports as he is less prey driven as the modern sports require — Ronin wants to go after the man, not a toy/sleeve. When he bites, he is not playing, he does it for real. This is fine with me as I don’t care for sports that much. I am sure he would pass an IPO trial with some additional specific training, but he wouldn’t get a top score as the modern sports are primarily based on prey drive play.
At the same time, Ronin is the sweetest thing when he is with the family. He is very gentle with our 2 and 5 year old. I let the 5 year old play outside by herself when she is with Ronin, with full confidence. Ronin was housebroken from day one — he never peed or pooped inside the house. He started sleeping through the night by 4 or 5 months (maybe earlier as I don’t remember by now). He has been sleeping outside his crate in our bedroom since around 6 or 7 month old — by the bedside, through the entire night and without getting in trouble. He knows how to relax, but he can play just as well when it is time to play. He is very clean and we love how he smells. He has no “dog breath” — I give credit to the raw diet. His hair is fairly short and his coat is shiny. He is intact and we plan to keep him this way.
So thanks so much to you! And it looks like Texi/Hemi make good puppies! If you breed them again, I’d be happy to talk to anyone who is considering getting a puppy from their litter.
Best regards,
Yuri

He is super smart and is protective. Rocky and our other Shepard have become inseparable. Thank you so much to our families addition. I have attached some pictures.

Everyone, meet Cooper!! Born on 17 Nov and already 53 pounds! I have had German Shepherds my entire adult life, but this pup is shaping up to be one in a million, his temperament is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. I can’t over how well behaved he is, he was using the dog door to go out with my other 2 shepherds on the 1st day I brought him home, I can count on 1 hand the number of accidents he had. At 4 months, I stopped putting him in a crate at night, sleeps either on the dog beds or on the bed, all night long! I’ve just started tested leaving him out during the day for a few hours with my other 2 dogs, he has behaved himself and has not chewed on anything, I know these things will probably happen, but there has been nothing yet. He has been a great addition to my German shepherd family. (Texi/Hemi pup)

This is the "not so little" guy that we have had for three years now! Such a sweet dog!!
Hi Linda,
We adopted “Tulip” last October, from Texi and Rambo’s litter, and I’m happy to report she is doing very well. She is such a smart girl! She passed the AKC Canine Good Citizen’s test at 8 months old! She loves to play fetch and has energy to spare. We’re wondering if you have any plans to pair Freya and Hemi? We will be looking for a black male this fall and have had such a good experience with you, we want to continue to get our puppies from your stock. |
Hi Linda
Just wanted to say thank you so much for everything yesterday! Kida is doing amazing she is the sweetest girl and so loving. She slept on me the whole way to the hotel and we are waiting at the airport now, we had no problems with getting her here and on the plane.
Here is a picture of her at the airport

Hi Linda,
This is Karle and Dawson. We just wanted to
give you an update on Nala. She turned 4 months on the 8th and is doing wonderful. Her and our other dog are true sisters. One minute they love each other and the next they are fighting for our attention. She is full of energy, a good protector already, and very loving. She is in training and just graduated puppy class. Nala has been a handful at times but she has made a great addition to our home. Thank you, (An Affie/Scooby puppy)

Hi Linda,
Wanted to let you know how great Odin is doing! He is almost 5 months now and he is happy and healthy. I can't say enough good things about him! He's super smart and very trainable, and house-breaking took virtually no time at all. He loves car rides, long walks, and meeting new people and dogs alike. Thank you so much for breeding such a beautiful puppy who is a great companion. I couldn't be happier with my choice!
Regards, Justin
P.S. - I have attached a couple pictures of the little guy. His coat is so incredible as you can see influence from both Tonka and Rambo.

Hello! Here is Max the puppy from the Affie/ Scooby litter we got from you in July. He is doing great and fits right in with our other shepherd. He is very strong, smart, and has a great temperament. Thanks again you guys!
Hi, Linda! Thank you for your time on the phone today. I wanted to send you a picture of Jaxon. He is now 4 months old and quite a handful! We sure love him though. He's close to 60 pounds already. The vet said he may well be 100 pounds, full grown. We call him our miniature horse
Also, we would very much like to adopt the female we discussed today when the time comes. So please keep us in mind. I think 2 are probably better than 1. Jax would love to have another dog around and has done so well around 3 older female dogs of our friends. Did you say she is Tonka's grandmother (I am probably saying that wrong)?
Take care!

Hey Linda, Beaux is loving life! He knows sit, down, stay and leave it. We just took him to get his 12 week shots and he did well, he's 27 pounds!! I get so many compliments on him, he loves the 3 little boys that I nanny and follows me around everywhere. He hates being left alone, adores chewing up shoes, and is a psycho a lot of the time but he is my little psycho! One ear is officially standing and on some days both ears stand, not there yet! Oh, and you wouldn't believe how fast he darts around the corner when he hears the ice maker, he will sit pretty forever for one little ice cube!

My husband decided he wanted to get another dog and he wanted one he could train as a service dog for him. I said "no, i don't want another damn dog". I was dragged along while he had pick of the litter and have kept my "i don't want another damn dog" attitude. Well, we got the puppy yesterday. That damn dog hasn't peed or pooped in my house once. he even had the nerve to paw at the door and wait for me to let him out to pee. I was like "ok.. you're just showing off. Lets see how you do tonight in your kennel". So.. night time came. I laid in bed feeling reassured with my thoughts that this is going to be an awful idea as he began to whine. 2 minutes later he was asleep. BUT, he woke me up at 4 am so he could pee so he didn't win completely.... but then he went back into his kennel and didn't make a sound... whatever.
I was a tad giddy today when i saw him chewing on my husbands new shoes. I told myself that i'd give him one chance to drop the shoe before i grabbed my husband and said "see... this is a horrible idea". *sigh*, he dropped the shoe after the first no and switched to chewing on his bone. Now, i'm not sure if this dog is onto me and just waiting for the opportune time to show his crazy or if he really IS an amazing dog. Time will tell and i'll sleep with one eye open for awhile and give him the "i'm watching you" fingers.
Here is a picture of him and i figured i'd share my thoughts about this "damn" dog in case anybody out there would be interested in a puppy such as him. As much as it pains me to say this, the breeder was amazing and it shows in her pups. She had worked on house training and kennel training him before he came to us and you can definitely tell. So, here is his picture and i'll put the breeder's info in the comments.

Smarter than you could ever think. He figured out how to get ice out of the dispenser on the fridge when he is thirsty. so you hear it in the middle of the night.
Hi everyone! This is Riley. He is 6 months, about to be 7 months on October 7th. He is from Scooby and Barlows litter. We thought we would update you guys with some photos of him! He was the runt out of their litter and noticeably smaller compared to his litter mates. He has caught up and then some in size. I do not know his weight currently. He had been gaining 10lbs a month until 5-6 months where he gained almost 15lbs. At the withers he stands at 23 1/2 inches tall. He is everything you would want in a dog, a companion and more!
We get compliments on him wherever we go!
We get compliments on him wherever we go!

Thanks so much for sending the paperwork, John. We LOVE our little puppy. He seems to be loving it here too. I've never met such a fearless puppy. He's just curious about everything and goes right over to check it out... Except the vacuum cleaner, but I think all dogs may initially be worried about those. :)
It seems like he had a really good start. We've been taking him on three
walks a day and my Anatolian Shepherd seems to be starting to like him. They've been playing all day today. We're thinking about naming him Jasper.
We'll stay in touch!

Hi John and Linda
I just wanted to tell you how much we love our puppy! We decided to name him Riley. He is so incredibly smart! He'll make a great therapy dog when he's older. I'm clicker training him and he already knows come, sit, down, shake, and wait for a treat. He learns so quickly. He's a smarty pants. Riley and our Anatolian Shepherd Sampson love each other. They play all the time. I thought you might want an update on the little guy so you know he's doing well in his new home. The picture is of him cuddling with Sampson. He follows him around everywhere.

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is a testimonial on the puppy we purchased from John and Linda Hartelt. We got an excellent, healthy, and intelligent German Shepherd from them in December of 2011. The puppy is growing fast and doing well. John and Linda worked with us honestly and professionally throughout the selection and post selection period. My husband and I both recommend them as quality breeders of German Shepherd dogs. Our beautiful puppy is a testament to their love of the breed.
Sincerely,
Candice & Mike Watkins

Kenai
John and Linda,
Just wanted to pass on some information regarding a puppy we bought from
you. We are very happy with Kenai, he is extremely smart, and a beautiful dog.
He was house broken (with the exception of a couple small accidents) within
about a week, and kennel trained in about the same time. He goes to the door and
wines when he needs to go out. Within about three weeks of getting him he
already knew sit, down, stay, come, shake, bring and give (toys), and much more.
He responds not only to voice commands, but also hand signs. He is very social
and gets along with other dogs well. He plays tug of war with our Rottweiler
(and wins). He is not timid and very curious, and most of all gets along well with our 5 year old. Attached are some pics. We would like to thank you again, we are very pleased and will begin some more advanced training in the near future.
P.S. At 4 months old he is about 45-50 pounds...
Sincerely,
Mark and Brenda

Oso
Aspen/Recon Puppy
When I went to pick up my new addition, I was apprehensive. I saw him and immediately fell in love with my little German Shepherd puppy. I took him to the vet and he got a clean bill of health. We went home and I spent
days trying to figure out what to call him. To me he looked like a little bear cub. I decided to call him Oso which is Spanish for bear. I have not regretted getting him. He is smart, intelligent, and very quick at picking up things. He also knows how to get my attention quickly by acting
goofy or grabbing hold of my pants. He does not leave my side when we go out. He gets along with other humans, dogs and is very curious about cats. He is full of energy. I do not regret getting my now one year old puppy.

Maya
Hello!! We just wanted to send you a few pictures of Maya - she is one of Cubby and Cevin's puppies from October 15th 2011. Maya is doing great and has the best temperament she is quick to learn things and has completed a basic obedience class and has earned her certificate for Canine Good Citizen all by the time she turned one. Our next project is to get her certified as a therapy dog this summer (had to take a short break because I was pregnant and delivered at the end of February) after we complete certification for the therapy we would like to start working over at Ft. Carson with military members who would benefit from her! She is great with other dogs, kids and loves to go to Bear Creek dog park to run and play in the water! We are looking forward to getting another puppy through High Country to add to our family but to also give Maya a buddy to play with :D Attached are a few pictures of Maya. Please give us a call when you have any news about the litters this summer!
Thanks!

Sammy
Hello John, Linda and Christine,
The past few weeks have flown past and now our little puppy isn't so little anymore! Sam is doing great! He is confident, smart, curious, and sweet. Attached is a picture taken of him today at almost 4 months old. And did we mention how handsome he is? He loves sticks, watching birds, food, and car rides. He's a good boy and we are so happy to have him! We hope you are well. We noticed that Recon is missing from your website - hope he's ok. Take care.

Prince: 130 pound male from one of our early litters
Our beautiful Katie is a great companion and still in training. Very bright and learns quickly.
Thanks,

To Me Mar 18 Our little kaiser is 18 weeks today. Both ears have been up for a few weeks now. His testicles were down at his appointment at that time he was 15weeks and a day. He such a sweet boy and still very vocal, he isn't a barker. He likes to whine when you get home so you will pet him. He loves people touch. He is Sieben's best friend. They get along great. We got Sieben fixed about a month ago. She is his protector, he follows her everywhere. He isn't as tall as her, but now 10 lbs heavier than her. Well he isn't even 5 months yet and we weighed him today and he is 59.4lbs.. He is a precious pup and does have a great personality. The two of them get jealous if your petting the other, so you have to pet both at the same time. We love him and has been perfect for our family. Thanks, Denise

The dogs below, are not my dogs. I got these pictures off the internet for a visual explanation of Degenerative Myelopathy.
Degenerative Myelopathy: Below are pictures of dogs who have Degenerative Myelopathy. It is important to understand what this disease is and how to avoid it. My dogs are tested for this disease and will not produce puppies that will develop this horrible disorder.

Degenerative Myelopathy Information:
As a German Shepherd owner, you may have heard about a devastating disease called Degenerative Myelopathy. Often thought of as the canine equivalent of Multiple Sclerosis, this progressive neurological disease affects the spinal cord and ravages muscle coordination, starting in the hind legs and eventually affecting the front legs, as well. Over a few to several months, it progresses to the point where a dog can no longer walk. While it also appears in other large breeds, Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is most prevalent in German Shepherds, and usually becomes apparent in dogs from 5-14 years old.
Watch for these symptoms
If your German Shepherd displays one or more of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian right away.
Progressive weakness of the hind limbs
Sadly, there is no significantly effective treatment for DM, and the disease tends to disable within months. While the prognosis for a dog with this disease is grave, the quality of life of an affected dog can be improved by good care. Exercise and physical rehabilitation can be helpful in maintaining the dog's well-being, maximizing muscle tone and strength, and maintaining good circulation and conditioning. Since many dogs have lost muscle tone prior to their diagnosis, it is important to gradually build up their level of activity, so gently and easily increase the affected dog's exercise level.
The outlook
Hopefully, veterinary science will develop disease-modifying drugs similar to those used to treat Multiple Sclerosis to slow or halt the progression of the disease. In addition, the discovery of a gene that identifies dogs at risk for developing DM could pave the way for therapeutic trials of medications that will prevent the disease from developing. This discovery might also alert breeders about which dogs carry the genes, so they can choose not to breed them.
Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs. The disease has an insidious onset typically between 8 and 14 years of age. It begins with a loss of coordination (ataxia) in the hind limbs. The affected dog will wobble when walking, knuckle over or drag the feet. This can first occur in one hind limb and then affect the other. As the disease progresses, the limbs become weak and the dog begins to buckle and has difficulty standing. The weakness gets progressively worse until the dog is unable to walk. The clinical course can range from 6 months to 1 year before dogs become paraplegic. If signs progress for a longer period of time, loss of urinary and fecal continence may occur and eventually weakness will develop in the front limbs. Another key feature of DM is that it is not a painful disease. Although any dog can be tested for DM, it is possible that the genetic background that predominates in some breeds prevents the development of symptoms even in dogs testing affected (at risk). At this time the required evidence of association between the genetic mutation and actual spinal cord evaluations has only been proven in the breeds listed.
Please see http://www.offa.org/dnatesting/dmexplanation.html and http://www.caninegeneticdiseases.net/DM/ancmntDM.htm for additional information on DM diagnosis.
C (AT RISK/AFFECTED): These dogs have two copies of the mutation and will likely develop DM during their lifetime. Although many dogs tested to date typed as ‘AT RISK/AFFECTED’ have been clinically confirmed DM, recent evidence suggest that there are other causes of DM in some breeds. In addition, not all dogs testing as ‘AT RISK/AFFECTED’ have shown clinical signs of DM. Research is ongoing to estimate what percentage of dogs testing as ‘AT RISK/AFFECTED’ will develop DM within their lifespan. At this point, the DM mutation can be interpreted as being ‘AT RISK’ of developing DM within the animal’s lifetime. For dogs showing clinical signs with a presumptive diagnosis of DM, ‘AT RISK/AFFECTED test results can be used as an additional tool to aid in the diagnosis of DM.
